Entry/exit application, Vietnam visa information

I have recently applied for a visa for Vietnam online. I have been given the forms to state that they have been accepted but they ask for a application form to be filled out as well. At the bottom it tells you to submit 1 form to the visa issuing office and the other to the police post on arrival. Where is the visa issuing office? Do i need to go to the embassy?

Answer

Dear Ashley

The statement at the bottom of the form is used for getting a visa at Vietnamese embassy only. You are not required to send the form to any embassy or consulate of Vietnam. Please just fill out and take one copy to Vietnam airport only.

We hope that helps.

Photo requirements for Vietnam visa

Do I need to submit scanned photos when I apply for a Vietnam visa online? What are the sizes? I am from Germany.

Answer

Dear Nico Martin Hertweck

No, you do not need to submit your scanned photo when you apply online. You just need to fill out the online application form in our website, providing your personal information such as full name, date of birth and passport number. 2 passport size photos (4x6 cm) are required at Vietnam airport only. You need to bring your passport along with the approval letter and 2 photos to get visa stamped on your passport when you arrive. You can also take picture at Vietnam airport at about 2 USD or less per photo if you do not have time to prepare those photos before departure.

We hope that helps.

Vietnam Visa for Russians

I am Russian nationality and I understand that I do not need visa to enter Vietnam if stay in Vietnam less than 15 days. However, I am planning to travel to Vietnam in December this year, and I will be crossing border and entering Vietnam by bus coming from Cambodia (via Bavet cross border point). Will it be OK for me to cross border and enter Vietnam at that customs point coming from Cambodia without any visa issue?
Answer

Dear Zahra

No worries, there is no problem at all. You can enter Vietnam at any border gates without a visa (airport, borders or sea ports) as long as you stay in Vietnam for less than 15 days.

We hope that helps.

Vietnam visa on arrival (VOA), thing needs to be prepared before you go

If you are planning to arrive in Vietnam by AIR at Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi or Da Nang airport, an alternative to obtaining a full visa stamp from the Vietnamese Embassy in your country is to opt for a very simple and cheap visa on arrival (VOA). Once issued, this visa is exactly the same as an embassy/consulate issued visa with the same limitations and conditions attached to its use.
The VOA paperwork is not a full visa, rather you employ an agent (before you arrive) in Vietnam to obtain an official letter of approval that you present at the VOA desk when you land. Upon payment of a stamping fee ($25 for a single entry visa, $50 for a multi-entry) you will receive your passport back with a full visa inside. Most sites ask about your present nationality as part of the application process, and provided you qualify you can apply for a 1 month or a 3 month visa, single or multi-entry. The amount charged by VOA agents for their service varies from $14 to $50, depending on the type of visa and the agent in question. Some tour operators and travel agents offer cut-price VOAs in the hope that you will book tours with them.
The only disadvantage of VOAs is that the VOA process at the airport can be slow, particularly at HCMC airport (Tan Son Nhat), where things can become pretty chaotic if people do not form an orderly queue. HCMC airport is Vietnam's busiest and has far more traffic than the other two airports, so in the high season it is not uncommon to have to wait for an hour or more, particularly if you are stuck behind a large tour group. In Hanoi and Da Nang, and even in HCMC in the low season, during quiet times of the day it can take less than 15 minutes to get your visa and pass through immigration - indeed you are likely to arrive at the baggage carousel before your bags do.
Applying for a VOA letter of approval on-line is very easy and there are many reputable agents, e.g www.vietnamvisabooking.com (using a search engine - Google, Yahoo etc. - search for 'Vietnam visa booking'). They accept all major credit cards and with some you can pay through PayPal.
On the agent's web site or by email you have to provide the following information:
Your full name (some agents specifically require the name in the exact order used in the passport, so surname first)
Present nationality
Date of birth
Passport number
Passport expiry date
Proposed date of arrival (the visa will start from this date regardless of your actual arrival date - you may enter at a later date but not before, so be sure to take time zone differences into account)
Flight reference
Arrival time
Airport of arrival and purpose of visit
Approval letter
See the video visa travel desk at the Noi Bai airport
After entering the information on-line or following email confirmation you will be directed to a secure web site to pay the agency fee. In 2-3 days the agent will email you the Approval letter (see image). Don't be alarmed if there are other people's names on the letter (it is common for agents to make bulk applications and all applicants' names are printed on the one letter, together with their dates of birth and passport numbers), but if you have concerns about privacy or security you should instead consider applying to an embassy/consulate for your visa. Please make sure that your surname, given names and required entry/exit dates are 100% correct. You will not be allowed to enter Vietnam before the entry date shown. The approval letter is valid at any of the three named airports but cannot be used at any land border crossing. If entering via a land crossing you must already be in possession of a visa.
Print out the entire letter of approval and don't forget to take it with you! Some airlines will ask to see the letter before they allow you to check in or board the aircraft and you will need it at the VOA desk when you arrive at the airport in Vietnam. The agent might also send you an Application for Entry and Exit visa form ( this form is available upon arrival but you will need to queue to obtain it). You should fill in this form in advance (ignore the instructions about printing two copies - only ONE is needed).
Visa on arrival is handled by the immigration service at the airports and as such if the airport is operating, so is the VOA department. It is absolutely vital that you have your visa fee(s) with you, in cash because there are no money machines (ATM's), money changers or any way of withdrawing money in the immigration hall and the authorities do not take plastic. If you cannot pay up in cash you won't get into the country and you'll end up having a wonderful holiday camped on the wrong side of the barrier until your return flight leaves. If you have a bank card, someone in authority might decide to take you out to the ATM's to get some money. Meanwhile you might starve to death etc (slight exaggeration, but you get the point), as it might be many hours before that happens.
At Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat International airport) the VOA window is situated over to the left as you enter the immigration hall, at the far end. The counter is sign-posted - LANDING VISA. Do not join any queues for Immigration Control. When you get to the VOA (Landing Visa) window, be prepared to hand over your Passport, one copy of the Entry and Exit form, entire letter of approval and one passport size photo (the officer will staple your photo to the form if not already attached). You should then go and sit down. Even with few people being processed do not expect passports (with the visa attached) to be returned in the order that they were presented at the window.
When your visa is ready, your name will be called. You then pay the stamping fee (USD $25 single entry, USD $50 multi-entry) You must pay in cash (no change is given) in Dong or U.S. Dollars. The notes should be in good condition but it's not necessary for them to be brand new. At HCMC, they will also accept AUD - $28 instead of USD $25), €25 Euros (but no change is given). Once you have paid, your passport will be returned to you along with a receipt for your payment. Check the newly issued visa for any errors while still at the window.
You then go to the immigration control posts to be processed in the normal way. Baggage reclaim/ Customs is downstairs.
Note: Public holidays in Vietnam, e.g. Tet (Vietnam's New Year), can seriously delay not only VOA applications but also embassy issued visas, so apply in good time.
Note: Citizens of some countries do not need a visa for short visits, but please check that the following information is still valid:
- Stays of not more than 30 days: citizens of Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos
- Stays of not more than 15 days: citizens of Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Russian Federation.
Note: Extending a visa is a simple process. However you will need to do it through an agent because there are many rules and the passport will have to be sent to HCMC or Hanoi. In general all extended visas are single entry and the duration can be for 1 month or 3 months (1 month visas are not usually eligible for a 3 month extension). The cost ranges from $20 to $40 depending on the number of months and the distance from the immigration office. The application can only be processed during the last week of the current visa's validity and it usually takes 3 to 10 days.
Note: Citizens of the following countries are not eligible for obtaining a Visa On Arrival. NB: The list is not exhaustive.
The various agents advertising on-line applications for VOA cannot process visa applications from citizens of the countries listed below. These citizens must obtain a visa prior to travel either from a Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate located in their country or via the Vietnam Immigration Department direct. Any approval letters issued will be declined on arrival.

What Vietnam visa is right for you

Visitors going to Vietnam must show a valid Vietnam visa before being allowed into the country. A visa may be requested from a Vietnamese embassy near you, or may be sourced through a reliable travel agency.
Compared to other Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam is a tougher nut to crack where visas are concerned. The rules and costs vary widely depending on the issuing embassy or consulate.
The Bangkok embassy, for example, can take your payment and process your visa on the very same day charging 1000 Baht (US$50 in its dollar equivalent; no other currency is accepted). The San Francisco consulate takes five days and $65 to do the same thing.
The information presented here may change without prior notice, so double-check with the nearest Vietnamese embassy before applying for your visa.

Visa exemptions
Most visitors to Vietnam will need a visa to enter the country, with a few exceptions. Citizens from ASEAN countries are permitted to enter without applying for a visa, and other countries have made similar arrangements for their citizens.
- Citizens of the following countries may stay, visa-free, for no more than 30 days: Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore
- Citizens of the Philippines may stay, visa-free, for no more than 21 days.
- Citizens of the following countries may stay, visa-free, for no more than 15 days: Denmark, Finland, Japan, Norway, South Korea, Sweden

If you are not a citizen of any of these countries, you must apply for a visa at a nearby Vietnamese embassy.
In the United States, you may apply at the Vietnamese embassy in Washington, DC if you're on the East Coast, or at the Vietnamese consulate in San Francisco if you're on the West Coast.

Vietnam tourist visas
Tourist visas are available for a maximum 30-day stay, with the option to extend your visa for another 30 days upon your arrival in Vietnam.
To get a Vietnam tourist visa from your nearest Vietnam embassy or consulate, download the visa form from the local embassy's website and fill it up.
Follow Vietnam-visa-booking, you'll be required to present:
- Your original passport - valid for six months more after the planned trip, and with vacant pages for the full-page visa stamp
- One completed visa application form
- One 2"x2" passport-sized photo attached firmly to the space provided on the application form
- A money order or Cashier's check payable to the processing mission. The Embassy asks that you call them to ask for the current fees, although the rates are common knowledge among travelers

Vietnam business visas
Business visas are available for business visitors (if you're investing in a business in Vietnam, or if you're arriving for work). Vietnam business visas are valid for six months and allow multiple entries.
The requirements for a Vietnam business visa are identical to those for the tourist visa, with the addition of a Business Visa Approval Form from your sponsor in Vietnam. You cannot get this form from the Embassy or the Consulate - your sponsor must get it from officials in Vietnam.

Other Vietnam visas
Diplomatic and official visas are issued for visitors with government and diplomatic business. Holders of diplomatic and service passports will be granted these visas, which are free of charge.
The requirements for these visas are similar to those for the business visa, with the addition of a note verbale from the concerned agency, foreign mission, or international organization.

Guidance for Vietnam visa application

Please make sure that you will need a visa to travel to Vietnam. Some citizens from ASEAN countries can enter Vietnam without visa within 15-30 days. For more details, you can contact customer center at +84-912685141
Read the guidance for the type of visa required for the purpose of your travel. It is quite important as the processing time for each kind of visa is different. For instance, business visa may take longer to complete than tourist visa.
How long will the visa application process take? Normally, the Vietnam Immigration Dept. may need 36 hours to issue the visa if they receive the normal processing request. For urgent case, customers should apply for rush visa which takes 8 hours for all the procedures. 4 hours visa processing is flexible in some cases but it is not strongly appreciated due to it danger.
What you need to apply
Visa fees: Visa service fee and stamping fee are totally different so make sure that you are clear all.
Correct visa application form: The information filled in the application form must be similar to the one provided on your passport. At the Vietnam airport, the Vietnam Immigration Officer will collect your information in their database to compare with the one on your passport. Any errors will not be accepted.
Supporting documents: normally it will be your valid passport. In some cases, the Vietnam Immigration may require your scanned passport sent to them to carefully check.
Photograph guidance for visa applicants : 1 photo in 4x6 cm will be needed to glue on the form on arrival.
Outcome of your application
Your visa application was refused; can you appeal against this decision? Vietnam visa requests from some countries will not be issued due to the difference between 2 countries diplomatic policy. Therefore, trying to apply other visa may cause you time cost and useless fee.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs): read all questions before making the visa request is strongly encouraged by www.vietnamvisaonline.net. It will reduce the hassle at Vietnam airport as information may change from time to time and your travel experience may not be suitable in Vietnam.

South Korea: Visa rules eased for 11 South Asia countries

The government will ease visa regulations for tourists from 11 South Asian countries from April 1 to attract more visitors.
Under the more lenient new rules, tourist visa applicants from the countries will be required to submit fewer documents to prove their economic and employment status, the Ministry of Justice said Tuesday.
At the same time, groups of tourists can receive visas without submitting personal documents separately if local tour agencies can guarantee their status as a whole.
It will also be less complicated to apply for “double-entry” visas, which allow tourists to enter the country a second time within six months for either tourism or a brief visit between overseas trips.
They are currently issued only to very wealthy people and valid for one year, according to the ministry.
The validity of the double-entry visas will be extended to three years, if they earn over $10,000 a year, are a pension recipient, have a profession such as journalist or doctor, hold a Korean university diploma or have a family member living in Korea as a migrant husband or wife.
“The move aims to attract more tourists from South Asian countries that already account for a large portion of the international tourists here,” said Kim Do-kyun, official from the Ministry of Justice. “We’ll gradually ease other visa regulations to encourage more international tourists under more convenient terms.”
The 11 countries are Myanmar, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Vietnam, India and Bangladesh.
The number of tourists from these nations has steadily been increasing, recording 357,932 last year, up 21.1 percent from the previous year.
The ministry, however, will monitor to see if illegal migrants take advantage of the eased regulations.
“We first amended the visa rules for the Chinese last year and we concluded there has been no major problem such as an influx of illegal migrants. We hope the new visa rules for the 11 countries will also work well without creating any trouble,” Kim said.

Work Permit Information for working in Vietnam

Requirements to Work in Vietnam

Information on Work permits for Vietnam is now essential because it's illegal to work without one. But I have never met anyone who's had any trouble and NONE of them have ever held a valid work permit.
But I tied to get it. I went through the process and I hope what ever work permit information I know is of help.

There is a grace period that can be up to a year. If anyone asks you, just say:
"It's in Process." And you'll be fine.
If you choose to work in Vietnam then try to find a good source of work permit information.
Most schools will force you through the long, tedious, almost ridiculous process of obtaining a work permit. And yet, they have little to no good work permit information to offer you.
Even if they have any work permit information on Vietnam, it's often flawed.
I went full out to get a work permit and got deep into the process. But, having the work permit information for Vietnam I have now, and looking back, I would never have started the process in the first place.
Changing places of work is common in Vietnam. When I begin a new job with a new school, I now outright refuse to get a work permit.
They always ask and always insist that their work permit information is reliable. But it never is and they always hire me despite my refusal to get a work permit.
So don't be railroaded by them. If they can, they'll have you working for free.

How to get a work permit for Vietnam

You Need:

  • Proof that You've been Living in Vietnam for 6 or more Months
You pay a 20% rate of tax on all your income if you have been in the country less than 6 months. More on taxes later.
The work permit information package that you can get at the tax office will give you all the details. But what incentive to report your earnings if you are just going to have to pay the government 20% of it?
So, I never told them I had worked the previous 6 months. I said that I had been touring around Vietnam.
As you can see, you will be on your own in getting the necessary documents for your work permit application. Just writing this page excites me when I think back to the joyous tribulations of getting my own work permit.
  • A Health Check performed at a hospital in Vietnam by a pre-approved Doctor
This will cost about $57USD and you should be issued the documents the same day. You will get a list of hospitals and the approved doctors you need to see from your school.
If they don't even have that work permit information, change schools.

  • A Criminal Check Done in Vietnam at the Central Police Headquarters
They want to see that you've not committed ANY crimes during your previous 6 months in the country. All the forms you'll have to fill out are only in Vietnamese language.
Take someone with you who speaks the language and is willing to help you. Sometimes the school will send someone along with you. Ask them and if they say no, change schools.
The criminal check will cost you about $10USD. You will be required to produce an original Proof of Residency Document.
This document is held by your landlord or hotel owner and is a record kept with police and recorded in a book held by whoever owns the property you are renting.
All residents; foreign or local, must keep the police apprised of their whereabouts at all times. Photocopies are not accepted. You will have to borrow the original book from your landlord and take it to the central Police Headquarters.
And the landlord won't be happy about that and will outright refuse if he does not have the proper permits to rent to a foreign national. Lots of fun in a barrel of joy!
Sounds complicated? I'm just getting started!
  • A Criminal Check done in Your Home Country
For some nationalities this is a long and tedious process. For others it is almost impossible.
If you are a Canadian with the right work permit information then all you have to do is get fingerprinting done and send the application off to the police station nearest your most recent address.
Processing time is 6-8 months and the cost was $70CAN Dollars about 10 months ago or the last time I inquired (Including tax and fingerprinting services).
For Americans, you have to fly back to your home country as they will not issue this document without you personally present!
I've heard recently that the U.S. government has implemented something to make this process easier. I believe that you can now hand over power of attorney to a relative and have them pick it up and forward it to you via the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam.
